Are you a cozy maximalist? This is a new term for me that I ran across while browsing on Pinterest. I was so excited because often when I try to define our home decor style here on the internet I come up short.
How does one describe a boho, modern farmhouse, electric, quirky home decor style simply and efficiently. It turns out cozy maximalist fits the bills and I love it. Call me a cozy maximalist all day long, I ‘ll take it.
Let’s jump into my interpretation of creating a cozy maximalist style in our small cottage farmhouse.

A cozy maximalist home
When it comes to creating a cozy maximalist home vibe there a couple of key elements I always lean towards adding to our home.
- Lots of warm wood tones
- Mixing metals with out lighting (like in our kitchen) or the hardware in a bathroom being different than the shower etc.
- Lots of real plants. My favourite places to shop are Home Depot for the cheapest plant selection and Costco when the season allows.
- Open shelving everywhere. Kitchen, bedrooms, living room you name it. I love open shelving for a cozy maximalist vibe to show off all your beautiful home decor.
- Texture! I love to add in lots of texture through rugs, pillows, throw blankets and long curtains. A key ingredient for me is also mixing patterns like polka dot pillows with a window pane grid pillow and maybe a floral tossed in for good measure,.
- Cute quirky home decor. A gold bunny candle holder (still one of my most requested items in our home), interesting shaped lamps, vases full of flowers and layers of cozy elements layered throughout each room.

My home decor style
When it comes to decorating our home I love to combine multiple design styles together for a unique feel. I gravitate towards modern farmhouse, midcentury, boho and cottage aesthetics. One thing I do not lean towards is minimalism haha which I think is obvious if you follow me on Instagram, the blog, YouTube or TikTok.
Although I love the look of minimalism and can definitely appreciate it in other peoples homes, I am always longing to create a warm and cozy vibe and for me that usually means more pillows, more art, more plants and more open shelving to display fun little finds books and candles.

What is cozy maximalism?
I love this term because really anyone could fall under the term cozy maximalist who loves a more is more approach to decorating. now don’t get me wrong, I am not drawn to a cluttered look. And often I find myself going through our home and taking something out here or donating something there. But over all I like a full look in our space vs a sparse look.
Think cozy European cottages from all your favourite BBC shows. Thats the image that pops to mind when I hear the term cozy maximalist.
I love all those cozy cottages. My version is a little more modern, mainly because where we live we don’t have big antique markets, vintage weekend sales or really very many home decor/furniture shops at all. This means I have to work with big box products either tailoring them to look more custom or having my husband jade make me something if I really can’t find anything on the market that will fit.

Those cozy cottage feelings
I don’t know about everyone else but I often find myself day dreaming about my perfect vacation spot. Though I love a warm beach vacation, my head is almost always filled with little cottage in the country, wild flowers blowing and beautiful chickens running across the lawn. A.K.A England countryside, but with modern conveniences.
That’s the look I am trying to achieve it our home. Or maybe look is the wrong word. That’s the feeling I am always chasing after when it comes to styling our space, looking for cozy furniture and home decor to bring my visions to life.
