We searched high and low for a cookbook stand that would fit not only our slim and easy to handle cookbooks but also those bulky, cumbersome ones, and could never find something that would work for us. So we decided to make one!
This launched us into our business Revival Goods, where we make handcrafted home decor and furniture. Our cookbook stands were one of our first products and have received rave reviews over on our Etsy shop.
But for those of us who love to DIY, or are trying to save some cash, we decided we would make a tutorial for how we make these adjustable little stands!

How to make your own adjustable wooden cookbook stand
Step 1 – Cut to length
Make the first cut at 10″, this will become the main back piece.
Make another cut at 9-1/2″, This will become the other 2 pieces for the shelf the book sits on, and the front piece.

Step 2 – Rip pieces to width
Take the 10″ piece and rip it to 11-1/4″.
Take the 9-1/2″ piece and rip two pieces from it at 5-1/2″ and at 1-3/4″. The 5-1/2″ piece will then be taken back to the mitre saw and cut shorter to 8-1/2″.
Now you will have 3 pieces:
11-1/4 x 10″ – Back
8-1/2″ x 5-1/2″ – Shelf
9-1/2″ x 1-3/4″ – Front
Feel free to adjust any of these pieces to your liking!

Step 3 – Measure out for the slot
The slot needs to be about 1/8″ taller than the thickness of your material, and about 1/8″-1/4″ wider than your 8-1/2″ self. In my case, that ended up being about 13/16″ tall by 8-3/4″ wide. I put the slot 1-1/16″ up from the bottom of the back piece.

Step 4 – Cut out the slot
Drill a hole in each end of the slot to start the jigsaw in. Use the jigsaw to cut out the slot, you may want to finish off the sides with a chisel to clean up the edge. You can also cut the longer sides out with your mitre saw, just don’t cut too deep!

Step 5 – Drill the holes
If you would like to have hidden fasteners, you can either use pocket holes like this, or, you can glue the front to the shelf. Alternatively you can use brad nails from the front side, but even if you fill the holes you will still see where they were, and I like to avoid that when possible.

Step 6 – Pick your stain of choice!
Stain it and wipe dry. Make sure you stir the stain really well before hand and feel free to mix stains to get a unique look!
