Picking paint can be one of the hardest things when it comes to decorating your home.
There are so many colors to choose from and it can feel very overwhelming!
In today’s post, I will be sharing with you the paint colors we used in our modern farmhouse style home.
Modern Farmhouse Paint Colors
One of the most transformative ways to update your home is with new paint.
It’s also one of the most cost effective ways to make your home a space you love.
The Importance of Paint
We live in a small cottage farmhouse style home thats only 1,100 square feet! Without a lot of room for decorating every inch matters especially in a smaller space. Paint was crucial to creating a modern farmhouse style in our small home.
Paint also has the ability to completely change how you feel in a space. Take for instance our daughters bedroom, that you can scroll down and see. In this room Paisley wanted a bright and cheerful feeling so we chose bright, though subdued colors (mostly for her mother’s sake) and an ombre rainbow effect on her walls for a youthful charm.
As much as I love color, and Paisley’s room is one of my favourites in our home, in our common space I always lean towards warm neutrals instead of color on the walls.
This is mainly to create a calm and relaxing environment, but it also creates a blank canvas for me to change out decor when the mood strikes, which in our home it very often does!
My Favourite Modern Farmhouse Paint Colors
Lets go through the main rooms in our home and I will share all the paint colors we used for both the walls and trim.
Our Modern Farmhouse Living Room Paint Colors
Our living room walls are paint “Classic Grey” by Benjamin Moore. The trim in this room is “Cloud White” by Benjamin Moore. In my experience these two paint colors work in almost every space. This grey is very warm and could almost be classified as a greige instead of a grey. I almost always prefer a warm grey over a cool blue grey and this one is perfect. It also never leans purple which is something you really need to watch out for when it comes to picking a grey paint color.
The cloud white trim is a warm, cream white and compliments the warm classic grey paint color beautifully. We have used this pain combination in multiple homes and it always looks beautiful no matter what your lighting is like, or the direction your house faces.
Definitely a classic paint combination and perfect for a modern farmhouse style but it truly works for any home decor style.
Our Modern Farmhouse Kitchen Paint Colors
Our kitchen is the room I have repainted the most! It took me a while to land on a cabinet color that I didn’t grow tired of, and one that made our very small kitchen seem larger!
We ended up painting our cabinets “Agreeable Grey” by Sherwin Williams. The walls and trim in this space are both “Cloud White” by Benjamin Moore.
A trick when it comes to picking a white wall color and white trim, is to use the same color but a different sheen for each. So our walls are Cloud White by Benjamin Moore in eggshell or flat paint. Our trim is also Cloud White by Benjamin Moore but in semi-gloss.
Our Modern Farmhouse Dining Room Paint Colors
When we moved in our dining room was painted a very cheerful and loud yellow. I loved how bright and fun it was, however I quickly craved a more neutral look for this cozy and sunny spot.
In this room we also went with “Cloud White” by Benjamin Moore for the walls and trim with exception of the electric fireplace which we paint “Pure White” by Sherwin Williams.
Our Modern Farmhouse Girls Boho Bedroom Paint Colors
Paisley’s room is our most recent makeover in our home. She wanted a bright and cheerful rainbow jungle inspired room. I love bright and happy colors but tend to air on the side of a subdued color pallet.
For this room we used
- Sherwin Williams 6212 for her shiplap, trim, door, and closet doors
- Sherwin Williams 6332 (darkest pink stripe at the top of her ceiling)
- Sherwin Williams 6331 (middle stripe)
- Sherwin Williams 6330 (bottom stripe)
It’s the happiest room in our home and sometimes when I need some extra cheering up I go sit in it and just take in all the color!
Our Modern Farmhouse Primary Bedroom Paint Colors
Lastly our primary bedroom. The bedrooms in our 1,100 square foot home are definitely the smallest rooms in the house. Our primary room being no exception!
I wanted to do something bold and fun in this space and after living with grey walls for a couple years I finally bit the bullet and painted the walls a dark smokey blue/green.
The color we used here was “Chimney” by Behr with “Cloud White” for the bottom trim in the room.
