Sometimes a big bowl of steaming wonton soup is just what the soul needs. These flavourful homemade pork wontons are super easy to make and perfect for days when a steaming bowl of soup is the only thing that will do.
Big on flavour, these pork wontons are filled with spicy ginger and garlic, crunchy water chestnuts and salty soy sauce. We make ours with store bought wonton noodles and chicken stock, making this soup super easy to pull together.
Lets dig in.
The Best Wonton Soup Recipe

This wonton soup is probably the most important recipe from my childhood. Growing up my Dad and Mom would have all their friends over and make batch after batch of these amazing pork filled noodles.
My Dad learned how to make wonton soup from a friend of his that lives in Thailand. Over the years the recipe changed a bit from the original recipe Somgiat taught my Dad way back in his college days, but it has only gotten more delicious and dear to our hearts haha 🙂

We would love when Mom and Dad would set out the big soup pot to bring a huge batch of water to boil and start laying the dining table with wonton noodles. Their friends would start arriving, and the house would be full of laughter as everyone got to work either filling the noodles with our homemade pork filling, or boiling batches that were already ready.
The best part, we would get to have a Pepsi with our bowls of wonton soup, and eat until we couldn’t eat anymore. There was always a competition of who could eat the most bowls, and it was just so much fun. We loved it.

Store bought wonton noodles
Now days I serve this soup to my family often. The recipe I will share below is a great size for a family of 4-6 but you can always double or triple it if you want to host your own wonton soup party!
My daughters also love this wonton soup, and I get requests for it often. The only hard part about making this wonton soup is remembering to grab the noodles from the store when I am there. Somehow I always forget and have to go back and make a special trip for the most important ingredient.
To make this soup you can use store bought wonton noodles. These can be found at most grocery stores, in the cooler where the produce is, usually near the prepackaged salads etc. Or if your grocery store has an asian section, it can be found where the fresh chow mien noodles are and tofu.
Our family uses Campbells Chicken Broth for the broth, which is our favourite but any chicken broth will do.

How to make:
To make this wonton soup you will need
Ingredients
- 1 package of square wonton noodles
- 1 carton of chicken broth (we like Campbells, full salt)
- Green onions for garnish
Pork Filling
- 1 lb of lean ground pork
- 1 can of water chestnuts
- 2 eggs
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1/2 tsp – 1 tsp ginger
- 2-3 tsp of garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp pepper
- 1 tsp salt

Instructions:
Mix all the ingredients for your pork filling in a stand mixer or mix by hand until combined. Clear off a large workspace, the dining table or countertop and start laying out as many noodles as you can. I usually fill our dining table with all the noodles from the package layer out and then start filling them.
Use a small ice cream scoop or tablespoon and fill each noodle with about 1-2 tsp of pork filling. Take one corner of your wonton noodle and fold it over to the opposite corner. Pinch gently around the pork filling with your fingers to seal the noodle.
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Once boiling drop in 10-12 noodles at a timed so they don’t stick. Wait for the water to come back to a boil and then cook the noodles for 7 min. Work in batches until all your wonton noodles filled with the pork mixture are cooked. Serve with store-bought chicken broth and top with green onions. You can also add an extra splash of soy sauce into your broth and noodles at the end for added flavour.
Serve with a cold Coke or Pepsi 😉
