It’s spring and I couldn’t be happier! Except for the fact that just like every year before, I am always shocked at the amount of mud that gets tracked into our house at the first sign of spring.
This year I came up with a cheap way to cover a light coloured sofa or sectional in an aesthetically pleasing way. This way while we wait for the ground to hard, and less muddy paws to be running throughout the house, we can still enjoy our couch and not curse our decision to buy it hah!

Pets and Light Coloured Couches
Spring means we are alll excited to get outside and go for walks and bike rides but with a light coloured sofa this becomes a problem every spring.
We also got a new puppy before Christmas so this year it was finally time for me to come up with some way to cover our light coloured sectional during mud season. Two dogs means way to much maintaince is required to keep our couch sparkling clean while we wait for the ground to harden and the mud to go away.
For most of the year I really don’t find it to be a problem to have a light coloured sectional in our living room. Our living room is the most used space in our home, but it’s also my main space that I use for photography for the blog and our woodworking business Revival Goods Shop.
I love having a light coloured sectional. For me personally its worth the upkeep of steam cleaning it once a month to keep it looking fresh. A cream coloured couch just leaves me inspired and more creative. I think its because its a bit like a blank canvas. But it does require more cleaning than a darker sofa.

Mud Season – Cheap Couch Covers For Dogs
Last year when Maggie was our only pet I got away with throwing a couple blankets on the couch when everything first thawed and it wasn’t a big deal. This year we now have both Ruffus and Maggie. Now couch clean up from muddy paws has just become too much.
The problem is I am just one of those people that needs my space looking somewhat aesthetically pleasing most of the time. Again this is primarily for work reasons. But even before I used it for photos I have always just enjoyed my space and time at home more when things are pretty.
This may not be an issue for most people. For those of us who have purchased light coloured sofas and don’t want to cover them with an assortment of blankets all season long I have just the fix!
Drop cloths!
How to protect your couch from pets!
Drop cloths work great for painting obviously but they have so many more uses. They are priced so well and come in a variety of sizes. They make great budget friendly curtains and table cloths. Drop cloths work great for scrap fabric if you have a beginner sewer in the house.
It also works great for covering your couch or sectional as a make-shift slipcover during spring!
My tip for using drop cloths in your home is to wash them a couple times to soften them up. If you need a lighter drop cloth to match your sectional or sofa you can also bleach them!
If your goal is to have something covering your couch or sectional thats as close to the fabric shade then a drop cloth works perfect. They are so cheap you could even have two sets. While one is in the wash throw the other on and your good to go!

Protecting your couch
I picked up our drop cloths shown in our living room while out shopping the other day. I was so impressed with how well they blended with our creamy coloured sectional. Depending on the style of your couch you may even get away with no one even knowing you’ve dropped a drop cloth over it.
Our sectional is very streamlined and mid-century modern. We don’t have a problem with the dogs getting their muddy paws on the couch pillows, plus they are removable and can be easily washed. So I just dropped the drop cloths over the sofa, I needed two 4×12′, and then placed the pillows on top to give it some structure.
You could also buy bigger sizes and cover your entire couch. Place some throw pillows in front and you will still have a neutral backdrop for your space but one that you don’t mind mud and grass covering it.
