Modern Farmhouse Living Room Update

May 15, 2021

Updating your living room doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. Here are my favourite ways to update a space without breaking the bank. Our living room style is Modern Farmhouse, but these tips could work for any room and any decor style. These also happen to be really quick and easy ways to transform your living room, win win!

Updating our living room

It’s been a while since I hopped on here and wrote a blog post! Things have been crazy busy with our shop Revival Goods. We have been adding lots of new products, including a curated home goods section. Alongside adding more to our shop we have been slowly updating our living room!

I find my home decor is always a work in progress. I am not afraid to try new things and new styles, but sometimes it takes a while for me to land on a look for our space that really truly feels like me. I am lucky that Jade doesn’t;t care what our home decor looks like so I do have free range when it comes to trying whatever my brain comes up with.

With that said even though we are home decor bloggers, I still have to make any changes on an extremely tight budget. We do not have a lot of extra cash floating around for home decor, just like most of you I am sure, so I am always looking for easy and affordable ways to update our spaces.

I also just love trying new things. Decorating is kind of my hobby, and sometimes that means shopping our house and sometimes it means buying one or two new items.

Inexpensive ways to update a space

Rugs

It all started when both my dogs ate something they shouldn’t have … and our shag rug in our bedroom had to be disposed of hah. It turns out shag rugs and dogs (at least Ruffus) just don’t go together. We new we needed a new rug for either the bedroom or switch out our living room rug for our bedroom and get a new one for our living room.

I decided to swap our living room rug for something new, mainly because I was looking for something a little softer and subtler in here and now seemed to be my chance.

Most people think swapping out rugs has to be expensive. The truth is there are SO many affordable rugs on the market these days. Ours was under $200 for an 8×10 ft rug. Thats crazy cheap you guys! I was nervous about the quality but when it arrived it was beautiful and soft and didn’t even need a rug pad.

You can shop our new living room rug here.

Update something old

Another great way to update your space is to take something old you no longer love and give it a makeover. We have been itching to transform our long shelf from ikea for a while now. We bought all the materials at the ne dog last summer but finally got around to doing it!

This long shelf used to be white and had seen better days. I love the Lack floating shelf line from ikea and have used them in. every home we have ever owned. They are cheap and look just like the other expensive alternatives.

The only downside is they don’t come in a lot of finishes. I wanted this one to have a soft maple wood look so Jade bought a piece of trim and some maple veneer to transform it for me. It was super quick, only took us about 3-4 hours on a Saturday afternoon and I love it! It totally softens our living room and looks custom … which I guess it kind of is now hah.

Paint

Lastly we painted our living room! Paint is. by far the most bang for your buck when it comes to truly transforming a space!

When we moved in I painted our walls and trim cloud white by Benjamin Moore. I love cloud white and have used it often in other projects however I realized after three years it just wasn’t working for me in the living room.

I take a lot of photos for Instagram and the blog and found I was missing some contrast whenever it came to photographing this room. We decided to paint the walls classic grey by Benjamin Moore and its amazing the difference it made!

I love it so much though that now I kind of want to paint the rest of the main floor Classic Grey too haha.

Quick and cheap living room update

And thats it! We only did those three things but I feel like they completely changed the look and feel of our living room.

Homemade coconut syrup recipe:
2 cups water
2 cups sugar
2 tsp artificial coconut extract (I buy mine one Amazon)
Place all the ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Once the sugar has dissolved remove from heat and let cool. Thatโ€™s it! I store mine in an old glass torani syrup bottle and then I am able to just pump it in my coffee like a real life barista โญ๏ธ
