My kids have been helping in the kitchen ever since the were wee little, but it wasn’t until last year when my oldest was 8 that I started to help her learn to read recipes and measure ingredients by herself. I know some families start earlier, but Elizabeth is a bit timid in the kitchen and things like lighting the gas stove and opening the oven when it was hot made her a little anxious so this is what worked for our family.
As we have been slowly teaching her how to make recipes on her own, we have organized the kitchen in a way that works for all of us! The two main suggestions I have for organizing your kitchen to make cooking with kids easier is to set aside a drawer (if you have it) or a lower shelf in your pantry and store your baking ingredients in easy to open containers. We have a drawer that holds all our flours, sugars, and chocolate chips. We keep all our baking sods, powder, cocoa, extracts, molasses and sprinkles in a “baking cupboard”. Having everything grouped together help the girls (and me) enjoy cooking so much more. We know where everything is, and have easy access to it all.
My other tip is to store your measuring cups, teaspoons and tablespoons in one container. We used one we picked up at the local craft store, because it has lots of compartments and a handle. I store it in the same cupboard as the baking soda etc. and when the girls start baking all they have to do is pull it down from the cabinet and, grab a wet measuring cup from the same shelf and they are all set to start baking! Another bonus of having all your measuring cups, and spoons together in a moveable container is you can keep keep it close to where you are cooking. Its these simple steps that really do making cooking and baking more enjoyable, and if its easier then everyone will be more inclined to bake and cook more frequently and thats truly the most important thing when it comes to teaching your kids to cook. Consistency!
We took a short video of Elizabeth making our families favourite Quick & Simple Soft Pretzels recipes! This recipe is a staple in our home, and it truly is so easy, our daughters make it all the time! Click here for the recipe …
