Easy DIY Floating Shelf Tutorial
This is our easy DIY floating Shelf tutorial!
We created floating shelves for our recent kitchen Reno, and we absolutely love them!
Purchasing floating shelves can be tricky, so my husband uses this method to make our own. That way you can create custom shelves, any length you like!

To Make
To make your own floating shelves you will need
- 2 sheets of birch plywood (whatever length you need)
- 1 1/2″ maple moulding for the fronts of the shelves
- 5″ timberlok screws
- KREG pocket hole jig
- wood glue
- brad nails
How to make Floating Shelves
To make our floating shelves Jade measured out the birch plywood to our desired length and then glued the two pieces together.
After the glue had dried he used a KREG pocket hole jig to make the holes for 5″ timberlok screws
Next he installed them on our walls using the 5″ timberlok screws, and screwed them into the studs in our walls.
These screws are heavy duty and can hold hundreds of pounds, making them perfect for creating floating shelves without a brace!
To cover the fronts of the plywood, we used maple moulding and attached it with wood glue, and brad nails.
Lastly I stained our shelves with 1 coat of Golden Oak stain, and sealed them with 4-5 coats of water based polyurethane!
And thats it!
They really are super simple to make, and will give your home a custom look on a budget!
