I love DIY projects, but my favourite DIY projects are ones that I can do in an afternoon, they often include a can of spray paint and a roll of tape BUT TODAY I may have hit the jackpot of all simple DIY projects when it comes to huge impact with very little effort. Thats my kind of DIY.
I have been seeing “rug headboards” pop up all over social media and Pinterest lately and for good reason. Rugs can be really affordable nowadays and they come in some pretty amazing colours and textures too. Most of the headboards I have seen are hung on the wall using pegs or loops but I thought why not reupholster a head board with a thin rug! So we ordered this amazing Moroccan inspired rug and waited for a day when we had time to deconstruct our old headboard and replace the grey velvet fabric with the rug.
We have a lot of DIY projects on the go and this one had ended up on the back burner but the problem was I really wanted to work on our Master Bedroom. Master bedrooms often get left till the end when we renovate houses or decorate our homes but a cozy relaxing space is so important and so I really wanted to get to work transforming ours. Then I had an idea…
Why not just hang the rug over our old headboard. So I tried it. And it worked. It really was that easy ha. We have wings on our headboard that you can still see in the grey velvet and I actually really like how they work together but if your headboard is flat with no wings I still think this trick will look great!
The key is to pick a thin rug that will fold over nicely. If you pick a rug with a rubber matting on the back it won’t drape over your headboard well. Here are some options above for rugs that could work. My favourite stories for rugs are here, here and here! We used a 5×7 rug and turned it so its the 7’ going across (we have a king size bed). When picking a design make sure you like it horizontal if you are going to need to spin it sideways like we did.
So there you have it, the fastest way to update your bedroom! If you are looking for the rug we have on our bedroom floor you can find it here.
What top you guys think? Are you going to hop on the rug headboard train with me!? The sky really is the limit with how it could look in the end. There are so many rug styles out there, I have chosen mainly boho style rugs similar to ours but you could do traditional or jute too!
So many options!
[…] we have had for 8 years and in the fall I “updated” it by throwing a thin rug over top (you can find my post on that here). I loved it all for the quick fix it was but now its the time to start thinking about actually […]
