DIY Ikea Hack Side Table

August 28, 2020

DIY Ikea Hack Side Table

DIY Ikea hack side table using the texture clay treatment. There is nothing more I love then a quick and simple DIY project.

Truth be told I actually don’t love a huge DIY project. I do however love finding simple ways to update a piece to make it my own and fit perfectly within our decor style.

And thats what this simple DIY Ikea hack is. I have taken an affordable side table and applied our texture clay treatment we used on this vase post a couple weeks back.

This entire project only took me less then an hour to make and its now the perfect little side table for our living room.

Materials for DIY Ikea Side Table Hack

For this project you will need

  • Nesna side table from Ikea
  • 1/2 cup of paint in your color of choice. Must be water based, not oil based paint for this to work. I used pure white by Sherwin Williams.
  • 2-3 tbsp of baking soda
  • blow dryer
  • paint brush

Instructions

First start by building your Nesna side table per the Ikea instructions. I ended up putting the glass in before painting it. I think it would be too thick with the three layers of textured paint to slide in once it is painted.

Next mix up your textured clay paint by combining 1/2 cup of paint with 2-3 tbsp of baking soda.

I tapped off the edges of the side table and then applied the first coat of paint. Let your paint dry in between coats. This paint dries really quickly but you can speed the process up with a blow dryer.

I applied three coats in total and on the last coat I held my blow dryer in one hand and dabbed on paint with the paint brush so that it looked extra textured.

After the third layer had dried I removed the painters tape and used a small craft brush to touch up the edges and corners with extra paint for a smoother finish.

And thats it! I love how it turned out. It takes a simple side table and makes it a little more custom. You could use any color of paint you like to create the perfect look for your home.
