There is something so comforting about a big bowl of perogies isn’t there! I grew up eating them as a snack on a cold day after school with just a sprinkling of salt.
Now that I’m older I prefer my perogies with a few more toppings. In this post I will share the BEST way to top your perogies for the perfect quick comfort meal.

Perogies, Pierogies?
First things first when I went to start writing this recipe my computer keeps giving me the spelling error line every time I write perogie lol.
So I looked up the proper spelling and it looks like pierogie is another way people spell it. My box of pre-made perogies spells it perogie so I am gonna go with that.

Fresh or Frozen Perogies?
Before you can top your perogies with my special sour cream topping you first need to make the perogies!
I have both made perogies from scratch and make them from the store and love them regardless.
If you are short on time grab some frozen perogies from the grocery store. My favourite are potato perogies with cheddar cheese.
We have also bought homemade perogies from local meat shops in Grande Prairie and I am sure your city has a small shop that carries local homemade perogies, or even a farmers market if you have one!
Alternatively you could make homemade perogies. Here is an amazing recipe for making perogies from scratch that I have used in the past. They are actually incredibly easy to make but are a little time consuming.
The Best way to cook your perogies
My favourite way to actually cook perogies is to first boil them and then fry them in a frying pan. Its technically not necessary to boil them first however I find the texture is better if you boil first then fry in a frying pan.
Perogies are so amazing though that you can totally skip the frying and just boil them and serve fresh and hot with my special sour cream sauce for a creamy salty tang and crumbled up thick cut bacon!
Homemade Perogie Recipe

Once you have your perogies cooked it’s time to top them. In my opinions its the toppings that really take perogies to the next level. When topped well you can even make this as a simple and easy well rounded comfort meal.
We often eat perogies for a quick dinner on Sundays. Sunday is a day we rest around our house but of course we still need to eat! I like to have a couple quick and simple recipes in my back pocket for Sunday night dinners that taste amazing but don’t take a lot of time.
The Perfect Way to Top Your Perogies
How should you top your perogies? My favourite way to top our perogies for a meal is with my special sour cream sauce and bacon!
Everyone loves bacon in our house so we keep a lot on hand in the fridge. I start by setting the oven to 375 degrees and lay out our bacon on a pan covered in parchment paper. I bake them for around 25- 35 min. This makes perfect crispy bacon without stinking up your entire house.
While the bacon is cooking I make my special sour cream sauce. For this sauce you will need
- 1/2 cup Sour Cream
- 1/4 cup Mayo
- 1/2 cup Green Yogurt
- 1 tsp onion salt
- 2-3 tsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp Worcester sauce
- fresh or dried green onions to taste
Special Sour Cream Sauce for Perogies

This sauce is so easy to make and is the perfect topping not only for perogies but also for chicken and sweet potatoes, baked potatoes, and as a chip or veggie dip!
I make it often and keep it in the fridge throughout the week for a quick topping.
To make the sauce you just combine all the ingredients together.
This sauce is even better after it sits and all the flavours meld together.
Now to finish your perogies you just top them with your sour cream sauce and crumbled bacon! Super flavourful and filling. We love them!
